Each January, at Epiphany, the city of Mondovi hosts an International Balloon Meeting. A sizeable number of the partipants are British, recognisable either by the branding of their sponsors, or the British-plated Land Rover Defender recovery vehicles all over town, which Bob (who has two Defenders) found almost as interesting.

The meeting takes place on both Saturday and Sunday, with flights at 9.30am and 2pm on each day. The balloons are launched together from the Parco Europa producing a spectacular sight as the sky fills with balloons all the colours of the rainbow.

This year we watched the Saturday afternoon launch and flight of 27 balloons (if we counted correctly after a rather nice lunch) from the Belvedere gardens and the Piazza in the Upper City.
