King of Wines and Wine of Kings

Amongst connoisseurs, Barolo is Italy's most collected wine. The Barolo DOCG district in the Langhe hills is a handful of medieval villages south-west of the town of Alba. The commune of Barolo itself is just a 35 mile drive from Casa della Fontana.

Barolo is made from the native Nebbiolo grape, which generally ripens in late October, long after other varieties have been picked. The grape is named for the autumn mist (nebbia means fog) that descends over the Langhe hills during harvest. The aim is to keep the grape on its vine until early November, to allow it to develop fully.

The Barolo enoteca is in the castle, which is prominent and easy to find in the centre of the village,

The Regional Enoteca (Wine Cellar) of Barolo is in a prestigious exhibition hall in the Castello in the centre of the village. You can't miss it, but do check opening times, it is not open every day. In July 2006 a tasting cost 2 euros and three tastings cost 5 euros.

Barolo is a masculine, full-bodied, and complex garnet red wine which displays its depth best with proper ageing - in its youth it is austere and tannic. After a minimum of 5 years, the wine can be labelled a riserva.

Barolo became the chosen wine of Kings such as Louis XIV and Charles Albert, as well as the Dukes of Savoy, Marquises of Saluzzo and Monferrato and numerous Popes. Writers and poets employed in their Courts have, over the centuries, given Barolo a long and glowing testament. It certainly has ambassadorial qualities.

At our tasting we were offered frutta from La Morra, medio from Barolo and forte from Diano d'Alba  - the range is astonishing. The frutta has a most wonderful bouquet and freshness of taste, making its 14% alcohol content deceptive, whilst the forte was regal and sophisticated.

We were also able to taste Barolo Chinato, an excellent fortified and spiced wine, drunk as a digestivo.

Barolo is not inexpensive. Vintages for 1990, 1996 and 2001 are considered exceptional.
