On the first weekend in September Cassine hosts its medieval festa. The old town centre is traffic free and intrusive signs are covered with sacking.

The hostelries offer typical menus of the era, and the street markets display medieval crafts - sword making, bows and arrows, candles, perfumes and mead.

In the arena behind the parish church, there are displays of swordfighting and falconry.

The air is filled with lute and other music of the day, and in front of the Town Hall, couples in courtly dress entertain onlookers with medieval dance.

For the superstitious, the macabre are present in force. Death prowls the streets with his very real scythe; willowy ghosts waft in the light breeze, and the Black Bride leads her entourage, skull in hand.

The visual highlight is the Court Procession on Sunday afternoon, a magnificent display of all of the participants in costume; royalty and serving wenches, monks, bishops and priests, soldiers, drummers and flag bearers.

Cassine, a hill top village, lies on the main road between Acqui Terme and Alessandria, and is just 21 miles from Casa della Fontana. During the festa, admission to the medieval centre costs 5 euros, and visitors receive a leaflet showing a plan of the town centre, the location of all of the various sites and activities and a detailed programme of events. There is adequate free street car parking in the lower town.
