Our cherry trees have produced our first harvest of 2007.

In May 2006, when we first saw Casa della Fontana, the cherry trees were so laden with fruit that, from a distance, they looked like giant holly trees covered with red berries.

This year an unseasonal thunderstorm when the blossom was at its peak has meant that the crop is not as heavy, but the fruiting cherry trees still made a fine sight.

Whilst looking into the orchard from our terrace we spied a colourful jay settled in the branches of the nearest cherry tree, and as we watched it proceeded to feast itself.

So later that evening, as the the heat from the sun abated, we decided to pick them. There are however plenty of cherries out of reach on the uppermost branches for our colourful friend to still feast on.

Cherries grow remarkably quickly. In March, the bare trees suddenly sprang into life with a display of gorgeous white blossom which dazzled in the sunshine against the clear blue skies.

After the blossom fell we could see the tiny green fruit that had already set. These grew rapidly through April, first turning yellow and then a rosy red,  whilst we patiently waited until they were ripe enough to enjoy.

Now (mid-May) in various stages of maturity, as Mr Jay has also discovered, the first fruit which has ripened as early as the second week in May, is ready for picking.

Casa della Fontana has two more mature cherry trees which will fruit slightly later, and will keep us supplied over several weeks with delicious fresh cherries, and any surplus can be frozen.

Earlier this spring we also added to these by planting a fourth cherry tree, of a different variety, which promises to crop a deeper dark red cherry in 2010.

It will be cherry crumble for pudding tonight - by popular demand !
