The Malvasian grape can be traced originally back to
Ancient Greece, but has long been grown throughout the
Mediterranean. On the island of Madeira, off the African Coast, it
forms the basis of the fortified wine of that name. Malvasian wine
is also frequently mentioned in classic English Literature, where it
is referred to as 'Malmsey'.
In Piedmont, there are two small, unconnected
districts where wine made from the Malvasian grape has achieved
DOC status. Both are in the Basso Monferrato area (north of Asti).
The comune of Casorzo is easterly, towards Casale Monferrato,
whereas the other, Castelnuovo don Bosco, is to the west.
You can reach Casorzo in about an hour from
Casa della Fontana. The old
village centre, clustered around the parish church, is a
picturesque, sleepy-seeming place, with modern life conducted mainly
along the main road below the hill, but just off this road you will
find a signpost to the Cantina Sociale, which by
contrast was a hive of activity.
The Cantina sells a variety of keenly-priced wines,
not just Malvasia, and not just in bottles. You can also buy wine in
boxed cartons, or bring your own large flagon in its protective
wicker basket - which is what the local people were doing. The wine
is syphoned in down a long tube from huge stainless steel storage
vats.
The
labels on the Cantina's 'standard' bottled range incorporate a
series of delightful, different paintings by local artist Mario
Pavese, all painted in a bucolic rural style showing scenes of
Italian people enjoying country life - astutely captured, great fun
to look at and worth a journey in their own right just to see them.
The Malvasia di Casorzo DOC is a sweet, fizzy (but
not sparkling) ruby red wine with an alcoholic volume of just 5%. So for
once you can participate in a tasting and still drive back.
We feel it would be a perfect companion to a light lunch sat outside in the sunshine, or a barbecue in the
evening.

The Cantina also produces a limited edition label of
Malvasia DOC called 'Rosa d'Amour' - the Rose of Love. This wine
comes individually packed in a stylish gift box, the ideal romantic
or special present.
