The city of Mondovi sits proudly on a hilltop - Mons Regalis to the Romans - from where, towards the west, there is an excellent view of the Maritime Alps which seem to encircle it. The Langhe hills lie to the east. Mondovi is also the gateway town to the ski resorts of Mont Mondole (2,382 metres).

In more recent times a lower town, known as Breo, has developed and here you will find the tourist information office on Corso Statuto, with ample car parking nearby. The old and new towns are joined by a funicular railway which has been completely rebuilt and recently re-opened. Tickets are one euro each way.

Mondovi has a long tradition of making distinctive pottery

Piazza

The focal point of the upper town is the spacious piazza with its baroque facades

Designer parking

Illegally parked (of course) for high impact

The upper town evokes the story of past centuries with its historic buildings, churches, magnificent facades, bell towers and steeples. The highlights are the baroque Piazza Maggiore, which has elegant medieval arcades, the frescoed cathedral (duomo) of St Donato (c1750), the Bishop's palace with its flemish tapestries and the belvedere gardens with the civic tower. (Opening times vary).

The Belvedere gardens lie on the site of a former church and are 559 metres above sea level. From the gardens there are spectacular views to the west, north and east. Within the Civic Tower which is situated in the gardens there is a display of methods of measuring time through the ages. Surrounding the tower there are unusual sundial devices and a map on the wall of the tower gives the location of a number of other varied and symbolic sundials nearby. Fans of the Da Vinci Code will enjoy tracking them all down.

Civic tower

The tower, with its outsize clock face, is 29 metres high and hosts an exhibition dedicated to the measurement of time.

Belvedere park

The trees will afford essential shade in the hot summer months

And this splendid sundial is in the adjacent piazza Sant Pietro (Found this one without the map!)

Apart from the typical Piedmontese food-based festas, the major annual events in Mondovi include the International Balloon Meeting (January), Carneval (February) and a Fireworks display (September).
