Nizza Monferrato is a small town with a long history. In the Middle Ages it was fortified by walls - now long gone although the narrow medieval street plan remains - but nevertheless it was beseiged and occupied several times.

The town was granted the status of a citta by the last Duke of Mantua in 1703, as celebrated on the memorial poster to the left

In more recent years it has prospered as a market and as a centre for the local wine trade. Indeed, Nizza has its own queen - the famous Barbera wine - 'La donna in rossa.'

The arcades adorning the very varied proprietory shops in Via Carlo Alberto provide pleasant shade and their stylish window displays are always interesting.

Municipio

The Town Hall, dating from 1535, is steeped in antiquity

Piazza Garibaldi

Flag throwing

Parading, throwing and juggling these flags must take hours of practice.

La corsa delle botti

The cask race is held between coopers' apprentices from the local cellars

Antiques market

The antiquarian/antiques market visits Piazza Garibaldi on the third Sunday of most months.

La corsa delle botti and gastronomic festival

The barrel race takes place annually on the first Sunday in June, during the 'Monferratointavola' gastronomic festa held in Piazza Garibaldi over the same weekend.

The festa season ends with the Feast of San Carlo held over the first weekend of November.

Practicalities

There is free parking in the Piazza Garibaldi except on Fridays (Market Day), or during a festa. (The separate food market is located a short stroll away in Piazza XX Settembre.)

The very friendly Tourist Information Office is in Palazzo Crova, but has limited opening hours.

There are two good swimming pools open to the public.

The railway station offers one through train each working day to Turin, and a 'rural' service (not necessarily direct) to Alessandria, Acqui Terme, Alba and Asti.
