The Portofino peninsula on the Eastern Riviera coast is a famous and fashionable world-class destination - by land or sea. The peninsula starts at the picturesque fishing harbour of Camogli and extends southwards to Portofino itself, before turning back to the lively resorts of San Margherita Ligure and Rapallo.

Allow a full day to visit the area. By car from Casa della Fontana proceed to Genoa then continue the short further distance along the A12 motorway. Car parking in the resorts is however limited, even out of high season. As an alternative, there is a regular rail service from Acqui Terme.

Camogli

For Camogli take the Recco exit from the autostrada.

The village is divided neatly in two by a small headland, with the resort running along the seafront to the east. There is a maritime museum here which tells of the days Camogli boasted 'three thousand sails'. The beach is pebbly, and the water very clear.

Basilica on the beach

The basilica of Santa Maria Assunta is built on a former island

Seafront

The beach is already in use in early April.

Towards Portofino

The far end of the beach leading towards the headland.

A dash of colour

The restaurants and shops are decorated with seasonal flowering plants

Harbour

The old harbour, alive and active, lies to the west from the headland. You can enjoy the delicious fruits of the sea in the small harbourside restaurants, whilst watching the fishermen at work, or perhaps there will be small children fishing on the quayside with a net, as children everywhere love to do.

Fishing harbour

There are many small fishing boats tied up at the quayside

Quayside

The colourful quayside buildings rise to six stories and are reflected in the dappled harbour waters

Church

The mosaic depicts the church looking over the sailing ships.

Cannon

These cannon were once part of the coastal defences

Fisherman

Working at repairing his nets

Fishing boat

The harbour is alive with the coming and going of the small fishing boats

Restaurant

One of several right by the harbourside; delightful viewpoints

Sea cruises

There is a regular coastal passenger service from Camogli to places of interest along the coast.

The Camogli 'Festival of the Blessing of the Fishes' is held annually, on the second Sunday in May, when sardines are fried in a 4 metre wide pan and distributed to all-comers.

Excursions

Golfo Paradiso operate pleasure sea cruises in season, calling at Camogli for the Abbey of San Fruttuoso, Portofino and beyond, or to Genoa.

The former abbey dates from the 10th century and occupies a deep inlet just around the headland from Camogli. It is accessible only by sea or footpath. An entrance fee is payable.
