Other permanent attractions include:-
Turin Cathedral and the Chapel of the Holy Shroud
Turin has been the home of the Holy Shroud since 1578 and the Sindone Chapel in the cathedral was built specifically to house it. Due to the risk of deterioration, the Shroud is not actually on view (it is next scheduled to be 'revealed' in 2025), but you can see a copy. There are a number of websites which discuss the Shroud at great length.
Palazzo Madama and the Civic Museum
This former Roman fort, medieval castle and Royal Palace has housed Turin's Civic Museum since 1934. Recently re-furbished, the building has a marvellous baroque facade and staircase by Juvarra, and contains art and artefacts from the medieval, renaissance and later periods.
Mole Antonelliana and the National Museum of Cinema
At 167 metres, the Mole was the tallest brick-built building in Europe and still is a distinctive part of the Turin skyline. You can also ascend to a viewing platform in a panoramic lift, although it is wise to time your arrival to avoid queueing.
Needless to say the entire view, from the former Royal Gardens in the west, across the River Po and up to the basilica of La Superga on the hilltop to the east, is superb.
Today the Mole houses the National Museum of Cinema.
The basilica church, built on a hill overlooking the city, is one of Italy's foremost examples of baroque architecture. The basilica contains the royal tombs of the Savoy family, which can also be visited.
Egyptian Museum
The Egyptian Museum is the most comprehensive collection outside Cairo and also has a very attractive website (with English pages) www.museoegizio.org
Founded in 1824, some 6,500 objects are on display with a further 26,500 in storage. The entire Egyptian period is covered, from the foundation of the State in the 4th millenium BC to its annexure by the Roman Empire after Cleopatra's defeat at Actium in 31BC, and the later onset of Christianity.
The last great addition to the collection was the chapel of Ellesija (1454BC) given to Italy by the Egyptian State in gratitude for its role in the international Nubian monument salvage campaign when it and other temples were destined to be submerged by the creation of Lake Nasser.
Palazzo Carignano and the Museum of (Italian)
Unification Italy was only unified as a country in 1870
(Rome was the last part to 'give in'). This museum tells the story of the
Risorgimento (resurgence), and the building housed the first Italian
Parliament. (In the film 'The Italian
Job', the internal courtyard of Palazzo Carignano was the location used for
the transfer of the gold bullion into the Mini Coopers).
Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art 500 paintings and sculptures

is close to Porta Nuova. It contains:- a reconstructed medieval village, built
here for a major exhibition in 1884, and so popular that it has been
retained. A medieval garden was added in 1994. botanic gardens, first established in
1729 a Savoy castle, built 1621-1660 (not open
