Valentino Park, alongside the banks of the River Po, is Turin's largest and most varied open green space. The famous reconstruction of a medieval village lies within its grounds (see below). The park is always attractive, but if you find yourself in Turin on a Monday, it is an excellent destination as most museums and galleries will be closed.

The park is only a short walk from Porta Nuova station, where trains from Monferrato arrive.

The Monastery of the Cappucini

Pleasant riverside cafes give an excellent view of the Monastery on its elevated site across the river.

Riverside Terrace

You can take refreshment at tables in the shade of attractive shrubs or vines by the riverside

Rowing

Leading boat clubs have their boathouses here. The water is the scene of energetic activity as they train

Umberto bridge

The attractive bridge at the northern extreme of the park

Ornamental garden

Sections of the park are given over to attractive ornamental flower beds

Ornamental garden

..and there are a number of fine specimen trees

Medieval Village and Fortress

The village was built as part of a large international exhibition held in Turin in 1884, and proved so popular that it was retained. Although the village is a figment of 19th century imagination, individual components and features are faithful reproductions drawn from  actual 15th century buildings in Piedmont and Aosta.

The Fortress

The Fortress is the focal point of the village

Riverside path

The village lies on the banks of the River Po. The white tower is based on a feature of the Castle of San Giorlo

Coat of Arms

The village is decorated with colourful heraldic arms and devices

Gable end

Dancing tonight ? A little bit of designer fantasy, I feel.

The Fortress is the focal point of the village and the only building, as designed, which is intended to be visited inside, and is furnished fully. There are however also a handful of small shops in the village, including a good bookshop.

Admission to the Fortress is 3 euros (closed Monday) and admission to the rest of the village is free of charge (open every day)
