Stroller, walker or hiker ?

Whatever your preference, there is a lot to see in Monferrato and the Langhe, and no rush.

Going for una passeggiata (a stroll) as a family group around four o'clock on a Sunday afternoon is an Italian National pastime. Why not join the fun? The cafes and ice cream parlours will all be open, so pause and treat yourself, and watch the world go by.

City walks

For something perhaps more focused, try Tourist Information offices for  leaflets suggesting itineraries which, for example, take in the principal sights in town, or guide you around a nature reserve. The themed itineraries available for Turin are particularly good, the series includes:-

  • Turin's baroque architecture

  • a guide to literary Turin

  • modern art (the city has numerous sculptures)

Country walks

From Casa della Fontana, you will have the opportunity to stroll or hike into beautiful countryside, right from your front door. Here are details of just two such walks:-

City walks
Guided and themed walking itineraries are available from Turin's Tourist Information offices.

Town walks
Likewise Alessandria, centre of the neighbouring province of the same name.

Off the beaten track
In the Berlino valley (Monferrato)

Vineyard walks
A series of waymarked walks through vineyards in the Monferrato Hills has been created by the communes of Alice Bel Colle and Castel Rocchero

Natural Park
You can get back to nature at nearby Rocchetto Tanaro, in the Monferrato Hills

Alpine walks
From the Mottarone cable car (Stresa)

Other comunes in our home district of Langhe Astigiana have also introduced way-marked walks in a combined initiative across the district; maps showing details of the routes are available from each municipio (town hall), free of charge.

If you want to 'do it yourself', the Istituto Geografico Centrale publishes an excellent series of 1:50,000 scale maps designed specifically for walkers, on which other sentieri (footpaths) are marked. Nizza Monferrato, Acqui Terme, Alba and Asti are all on Map 19. These maps are available in many bookshops and edicole (kiosks).

Long distance walks

Serious hikers may want to head for one of the National Parks in Piedmont and neighbouring Liguria, or to the upper Belbo and Bormida valleys. These both have designated long-distance footpaths.

Italy's longest continuous walk, the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, runs from Ventimiglia to near La Spezia in neighbouring Liguria (275 miles). There is a website with English pages at www.altaviadeimontiliguri.it

The otherwise wonderful Summer weather does however mean that the best time of year for serious hiking in Italy is in the Spring and the Autumn.
