Spa facilities in the Monferrato Hills

Treat yourself, take a day out at one of the local spas. Be pampered, relax, unwind and get that feel-good factor.

Or if you are new to pampering, whilst the rest of Italy takes a siesta, indulge yourself and try just one of the therapies on offer ?

We've checked out the facilities and I will definately be working my way through the long list of therapies available, which include:

• therapeutic massages

• alternating hot and cold showers (a genuine Roman therapy)

• beauty mudpacks (spa water and selected clay at a temperature of 47 degrees)

• underwater hydromassage

• thermal pool

• anticellulite treatment

• holistic therapies

• beauty therapies

Therapies and prices vary so it's best to check the final details with the individual establishments, but to give you an idea, as I write this, a 50 minute Reiki treatment costs 45 euros.

Agliano Terme

The nearest spa is at Agliano Terme, just 9 miles from Nizza Monferrato. Agliano is an attractive hill village, just off the main road between Nizza and Asti. The Spa, which is well-signposted, lies in a peaceful valley below it. There is also a pleasant cafe and free car parking.

Acqui Terme

The Romans were so impressed by Acqui's natural thermal springs that they built the first city here. During the Belle Epoque, Acqui became one of the most prestigious spa centres in Europe.

Acqui's thermal spring water fell as rain or snow around 2,000 years ago. After a slow process of filtration through rock, to a depth of 3,000 metres, it has become heated and acquired the salts, bromine, iodine and sulphur minerals which give it therapeutic properties, and being expelled through a fault in the rock, it does not have time to cool down again, emerging at the bollente at 73 degrees centigrade.
